EPA Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Lead Law

Effective April 22, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Lead Law implemented new regulations concerning lead in homes and facilities built prior to 1978. Any demolition project that disturbs painted surfaces must be performed by EPA certified firms using certified renovators.

On July 9, 2010, the MA Division of Occupational Safety (DOS) took over enforcement of the RRP Rule, making it the ninth state to assume control of the Rule.

What RRP means to you…

On properties built before 1978 any wood or any painted surface being repaired, renovated demolished or painted (RRP) is assumed to be lead contaminated.

This applies to all painted surfaces inside or outside your property.

For interior work, the work area must be lead dust sealed and contained for 6 feet of the work area. For exterior projects, the sealing and containment distance is 10 feet around the work area. Specific disposal and wipe clean test methods with the assist of a HEPA vacuum are required for all interior and exterior projects.

At the completion of the job, a retest for lead dusting residue is required.

MA DOS will impose fines of $5,000 per day, per violation for any renovators not complying with lead-safe work practices.

The new regulations, and the practices they require, brought many changes to the renovation, repair and painting field. What did not change is Mark-One Inc.’s commitment to providing its clients with exceptional demolition and disposal services.
